There will be many factors preventing you to lose weight but have you ever heard the phrase: she is eating out of boredom. Well apparently it is a thing. You can check. From my own experience I can tell you that it is true, as I do eat out of boredom from time to time.
Commercial break in a show of your life
Do you ever feel like you need to press a pause button in your life and just have a break from everything…something like a commercial break during your lifetime show.
… of course you do, we all need a break sometimes.
Taking a break to take care of myself
I did exactly that. This year I took a break from my job and my usual life in order to take care of myself. That is probably the best decision I have ever made in my life. Last 12 years were in a constant hurry and everything was on schedule – go to work, open the shop in time, make target for a cruise, go out explore the port, send a report, get home. Then at home it would be see all friends and family in a few weeks, be everywhere do everything and then it goes all over again. Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining. I love my job and wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
Now I finally have time to relax. There is no stress, at least no work related stress. I have time to catch up on all the movies and series I have missed in the past few years (just finished all X-men and Avengers movies), I am catching up on reading as well. Really I have to admit that, even though I love to read, recently I have spent more time watching movies. Also I am spending lots of time with my friends and family. And that is awesome.
When everything should be prefect, but something is missing
My weight loss plan is going great, in a day or two I will hit my first goal of 20kg down to the initial weight. I am 500g away from it, and you wouldn’t believe how stubborn those 500g can be.
All is wonderful…
… well, it should be all wonderful,
but not really…and you know why: I am getting bored. I am not used to sit around and do nothing. I always had a job, or at least something to do. Since I started working on a ship, I have never had a dull moment. That was really a fast pace lifestyle. There was always something going on. I know you will say “ah, poor you’. It is ok, you can say whatever you want, but keep in mind I worked hard to deserve this privilege of taking a long break.
Organize your meal schedule
One thing that I noticed is that If I don’t organize my time properly and if I am not excited and busy with something, then I eat out of boredom. I catch myself having more of those little trips to the fridge. I have a bite of this and a bite of that. Exactly the things I shouldn’t be doing. Articles on the web argue a lot on the amount and frequency of the meals we should have, but let’s stick to the good old: 3 meals and 2 snacks. Perfect scenario would be to organize your meal schedule and always eat at the same time. We all know that scenario almost never happens, right?
I usually eat 3 to 4 meals a day, as I tend to skip snacks. I think that is ok, nobody is perfect. So far this worked well for me. I have never been hungry and I managed to lose almost 20kg since February. Conclusion is that I must be doing at least something right.
However everybody agrees on one – you shouldn’t be eating out of boredom.
Eating out of boredom is one of the biggest enemies when you are trying to lose weight
This is what happens to me when I am bored – first comes the little thought: ”mmmmm, I want to eat something salty, lets check the fridge”, then it comes the other one: “mmmm, let’s have something sweet now, lets check the fridge again”, and the next thing I know, my ass is sticking out of the fridge. And I can see it on my parents faces – something like “what the heck are you doing?” By now they know better than to comment, as I turn into a Hulk whenever someone tries to preach about my eating habits. Although if you don’t turn into a beast when someone mentions that you shouldn’t be visiting fridge so often, then have that one person or more of them to stop you. You can also keep an empty fridge, but that works only if you live on your own.
So how to avoid this trap called eating out of boredom? I usually try to keep myself busy. I go for a walk, or visit friends. That is how I started this blog, I needed something to do while taking care of myself. If you have kids, it is very easy to get busy and that can benefit both you and the kids.
What to do to keep yourself occupied
So here is the list of things you can do to prevent eating out of boredom:
- be creative – you can paint, do needle felting or anything that makes you happy and excited
- read – holding a book means you cannot have food in your hands. Well let’s be honest, you can, just choose not to.
- play with your kids
- get yourself busy making your next meal or snack. No tasting ingredients in the process
- be more productive at work. Your boss will notice. Maybe something good comes out of it.
- go for a walk in a park
- go shopping
- do your nails
It doesn’t really matter what you will do, it is important that it is fun and excites you enough to just keep you nicely occupied. Then you won’t be eating out of pure boredom. And you won’t be thinking about the food as much.
Don’t forget to drink water
One more thing I do, when I start thinking about food and eating, I drink water. Recently I read that when you are craving something, and you don’t know what it is, you are probably thirsty. Well I am not so sure about that, but it doesn’t hurt to try. I need to drink more water anyway.
Tell me what is your biggest enemy when trying to lose weight. It is always good to find out what other people are thinking. Sometimes, just knowing that you are not the only one experiencing something, really helps.
Bye for now, keep yourself busy by hitting that follow me button and I am off to make some delicious cherry-apple ,no sugar added, filo pastry pies.
